The film treats military wives as partners in the mission, not accessories. The most ideologically interesting element is the portrayal of the Vietnamese commander, Nguyen Huu An. He is competent, strategic, and not a villain. His closing observation that the Americans will think this was their victory and that this will become an American war is historically accurate and not presented as a gotcha. The film allows the audience to hold two truths: the American soldiers fought with honor, and the war they were fighting was unwinnable on the terms it was fought. That is not woke. That is honest. We Were Soldiers is rated R for graphic combat violence. The battle sequences are intense and unflinching, including napalm strikes, close-quarters combat, and the deaths of named characters the film has made you care about.
