Project Hail Mary opens with a man waking up alone on a spacecraft with no memory of who he is or why he is there. It ends with him choosing to stay, alone, in a distant solar system, because someone else needs him more than Earth does. Everything between those two moments is one of the most satisfying, morally coherent, and genuinely optimistic science fiction films produced by a major studio in the last fifteen years.

Ryan Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher who was recruited against his will for a last-chance mission to save Earth. The sun is dying, slowly, because a mysterious organism called Astrophage is feeding on it. Grace woke up as the sole survivor of a three-person crew. He has no memory. He is alone. He has to figure out everything from scratch: where he is, why he is there, what he is supposed to do.

This is the premise Phil Lord and Christopher Miller inherited from Andy Weir's 2021 novel, and they execute it with a fidelity that should be studied in film schools. They trusted the book. The book is good. The result is a film that is also good.

What makes Project Hail Mary work is its moral universe. Grace does not save Earth because he is the chosen one. He is not a hero who wanted the job. He is a man who understood what was at stake and did what needed to be done, including erasing his own memory to force himself onto a mission he had already refused. That is not a superhero. That is an adult. The film treats its audience the same way.

The friendship between Grace and Rocky, an alien from another star system pursuing the same problem from the opposite side, is the film's emotional core. Rocky communicates through musical tones rather than language. The early sequences where the two work out how to talk to each other are genuinely funny and genuinely moving, sometimes simultaneously. Their collaboration is built on competence, mutual respect, and shared stakes. It is not a diversity partnership. It is a scientific one.

Lord and Miller bring their signature lightness to the film without undercutting its weight. Grace is funny, specifically the low-key funny of a person who copes with terror through dry observation. Gosling has rarely been better. The film earns every emotional beat it collects.

At $164.3 million domestic through two weeks and currently sitting at number one, Project Hail Mary is delivering the box office numbers that remind studios that audiences will show up for original, well-crafted stories. This film does not exist in a franchise. There is no cinematic universe waiting to absorb it. It stands alone, as Ryland Grace stands alone, and it is more than enough.
