Here's what Backrooms is: a door opens in the basement of a furniture showroom. That door should not be there. People who go through it find themselves in a space that is geometrically impossible, fundamentally hostile, and completely without apparent exit. The space is not haunted by ghosts. It's not filled with monsters. It's just wrong. Deeply, fundamentally, existentially wrong. That wrongness is the horror.

Kane Pixels spent years building this concept on YouTube. His Backrooms videos are short - usually under 10 minutes - and work almost entirely through atmosphere and sound design. Her casting suggests A24 wanted a performer capable of carrying a character-driven horror film that depends on internal responses to external wrongness rather than conventional action or scares. That's a smart casting choice for this concept.

Mark Duplass in a supporting role brings his indie film credibility and experience with intimate, understated performance. The ensemble casting across the board suggests A24 is building this around character work rather than spectacle. That's consistent with Kane Pixels' YouTube approach - the horror comes from situation and atmosphere, not from elaborate set pieces or gore.
